AU promotion at 109..

There's almost always something going on in front of the 109 building in Shibuya, and last weekend it was some kind of promotion for one of the big three mobile phone companies, AU. I couldn't tell you what they were promoting, as more interesting to me were the crowds of guys with their digital cameras hanging on every word that the head promotion girl was saying. I'm not sure they were there to find out about the new phone either, but it did remind me that idol worship is alive and well here in Japan..

Maid in Japan..

Strolling through Yoyogi park on Sunday afternoon, and admiring kanzakura trees (thanks Neil) I spied a young lass decked out in full maid gear, stepping on someone's head! After a little further observation I surmised that it was probably some kind of satsuekai, where a group of young enthusiastic photographers get their click on with a young model. It wasn't all head stepping though for this young maiden, as the small group soon took up residence in front of the early blooming trees for a bit more straight up clickery..

J-babe and friends live cross from Koen Dori..

Wandering past NHK this fine evening I chanced upon a BS TV crew filming a live spot for some concert they were broadcasting. As the live cross drew nearer and the talent rehearsed her lines, passers by were dragged in to join in on the song. By the time the final group of people that joined had hastily put down their Donkihote bags and stood with the group, there was about 10 seconds to go..

If you hang around Shibuya long enough, specifically around the First Kitchen area of Centregai, you'll probably start to wonder:

a) Who this guy is
b) What his little picture books contain
c) How he gets the multitudes of young fresh faced girls to stop (he's pretty creepy..)

Tucked into the sanctuary of Shoto's Nabeshima koen, one may find any number of creative entities filming for tv or movies, or even shooting for magazines. On this fine day it was a group of fine lovelies getting what looked to be the 撮影会 (Satsuei Kai) treatment from a dozen or so eager photographic enthusiasts. Danny Choo has experienced the seemingly surreal world of "Group Idol Photography", and explains the dealio quite well here. Berry Waffle is a company that organizes such events, and for a mere 10,000 yen one can enjoy a full 60 seconds of free clickery..

Nothing like going to a festival, sitting on a plastic mat in the sunshine, drinking beer with your friends, and watching the world go by. Especially if your world consists of this..

Domina

Domina dresses sexy to make money for bags and shoes and to be able to afford her semi-upmarket mansion apartment in a place that makes her feel accomplished. What she does with her whips behind closed doors is arguably this side of legal, but probably dripping in the kind of content confined to those photo books you hide under the coffee table, not on it.

Actually I can only guess what was happening during this random encounter in a back alley of Shibuya, but I can say that I was allowed one picture only. As for those photo books, I do have Rikki Kasso's Tokyo Undressed, and yes, it's under the coffee table..

Park life: So you wanna be a Pop Star?

I love Koen dori for all the talent that comes out on the weekends to develop their craft and hopefully expose themselves to a wider audience, the sad part is that the scene so often looks like this: cute babes singing their hearts out to a bunch of old scary looking otaku guys with huge lenses zooming in on god knows what.

Having said that, rock on girls..
